Dr. Jess Block Nerren

Dr. Jess Block Nerren is a scholar, educator, and advocate for equity and disability inclusion, serving as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Communication and Media at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). She is also the Returning Faculty Disability Inclusion Fellow and Co-Founder of CSUSB’s Disability Studies Minor.
Dr. Nerren holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from CSUSB and an M.A. in Communications from CSU Fullerton. As an Accredited Public Relations (APR) professional, she integrates over 20 years of experience in public relations, journalism, and nonprofit advocacy with her academic work. Her teaching includes graduate and undergraduate courses in public relations, crisis communication, research methods, and disability studies.
Her research explores inclusive communication, autism advocacy, and equity-focused pedagogy. She has authored peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and edited volumes, and is a recognized voice in emerging frameworks such as DisCrit and AutCrit. In 2025, she won the Best Overall Presentation Award at the World Conference on Media and Mass Communication.

Introduction to Multimodal Analysis
The workshop will provide an overview of multimodal analysis, including key theoretical and analytical concepts. The focus is how meaning arises from the integration of language with different semiotic choices in multimodal texts and how these meanings are resemiotised and recontextualized over time. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to apply the theoretical tools for close analysis of multimodal texts.

Profile
Jörg Matthes is Professor of Communication Science at the Department of Communication, University of Vienna, Austria. His research explores digital media effects, artificial intelligence, advertising and consumer behavior, political communication, sustainability communication, and empirical methods. He has published extensively on these topics, with over 300 journal articles to date. In 2014, he received the Young Scholar Award from the International Communication Association (ICA), followed by AEJMC’s Hillier Krieghbaum Under 40 Award in 2016. In 2019, he was honored with the Teaching Award of the University of Vienna, he was elected as Fellow of the ICA in 2021, and in 2022, he was awarded an Advanced Grant (€2.5 million) from the European Research Council. He served as Vice Chair (2012-2014) and Chair (2014-2022) of the Department of Communication at the University of Vienna, which rose to be ranked among the top 30 Departments for communication science in the world under his leadership. He served as an evaluator and advisor for the quality assessment of higher education institutions and research programs in The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Bulgaria, or China. He has served the field in various editorial roles, including as Associate Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Communication Methods & Measures, and as Associate Editor for Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, and the Journal of Advertising. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Communication Theory.
